A Closed and Common Orbit
So: the prequel was 'Joss Whedon's Firefly, but everyone is even Nicer’ and this one is ‘the boringest characters from the prequel, but alone and explaining things’

There’s this meme template where the caption is “this is the future liberals want”, paired with illustration of happy diverse aliens on a space colony. And that’s... all this book is. Except without a plot?
I’m 1/3 in and it’s literally just barely-veiled exposition about a happy diverse pansexual alien space colony. Which sounds interesting, but it’s almost all explaining pronouns and performative kindness and explaining how diffent species do consent for various degrees of intimacy, all for the benefit of our useful idiot point of view character. But thus far: nothing happens. No conflict. No stakes.
I guess to be fair there IS also a B-plot, interspersed flashbacks about another characters childhood as a literal slave. But we already know she grows up to be nice and stable - she's one of our Nice people in the A storyline - so this series of flashbacks is just a Trauma Plot with no stakes.
