The Graveyard Book
I just re-read this in 2016, and it totally holds up. Still great!

I actually re-read this shortly after I read the actual Jungle Book for the first time, and it's full of references and re-tellings of Jungle Book stories.

This is a great little juvenile-fiction 'chapter book', in high Gaiman style. It's basically a re-imagining of the Jungle Book, but if Mowgli's was raised in a cemetery by ghosts instead. Oh, and if he was still being pursued by a serial killer who murdered his parents.
It's mostly sweet and not-very scary.

Bod said, 'I want to see life. I want to hold it in my hands. I want to leave a footprint on the sand of a desert island. I want to play football with people. I want,' he said, and then he paused and he thought. 'I want everything.'
