The Ocean at the End of the Lane

This is the new book by Neil Gaiman. It's almost a novella -- you'll probably read it in one sitting. I really loved it, while being surprised at none of it.

I already like most of Gaiman's work, and this is a perfect blend of two of his earlier books that I think are great: Coraline x The Graveyard Book. In all of these (and others of his), a kid accidentally wanders into a hostile magical world, gets in big trouble, and barely escapes by the skin of his teeth. This is no different, but it's got a darker, meaner edge.

I liked myths. They weren't adult stories and they weren't children's stories. They were better than that. They just were.

I saw the world I had walked since my birth and I understood how fragile it was, that the reality was a thin layer of icing on a great dark birthday cake writhing with grubs and nightmares and hunger.
