The Fellowship of the Ring
Apparently I only read Tolkien for comfort anymore, but I picked up Fellowship when I was sick in bed with a fever. I'm surprised at how much of my memory of the book is colored by the Jackson movies. It's much richer, and so much more focused on the Shire and its near environs.
Look, I know it's cliche to discover that the book is better than the movie - I absolutely knew that already - but I was just a bit surprised at how much better this book is. Even if it's not a great book to start with.
