Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
It definitely holds up as the first 'good' Harry Potter book, just like it's the first 'good' HP movie.

I actually picked this up in a rare case of previewing a book for my kids: we'd read the first two but found the second one a bit on the scary side for them. They loved it of course, and loved being scared. But my wife didn't love dealing with their nightmares. And I'm proud to say they asked me to tone down my scary voices.
