Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm
And it's Philip Pullman! I loved the Dark Materials books, or at least a lot of them.

Yikes. The Brothers Grimm fairy tales are of course famous for being quite grim. But in these retellings, there's something more sinister, something nastier lurking beneath them. They're the sort of thing that at first I'd be able to read with the kids, even glossing thru the more violent or disturbing parts. I don't think I'm a particularly squeamish reader, but there's just something weirdly mean-spirited about these retellings that I can't put my finger on, and didn't want to spend much time with.
