Little House in the Big Woods
I've never read this series, but started reading them as bedtime chapters with the kids. They're... dull, but not quite boring. (I remember hating the TV series as a kid, even though my family watched it). They're a lot more didactic than I expected, and clearly out to communicate not just the experience of Ingalls life, but to teach those independent, puritan values as well. I was surprised at how much mechanical explanation there was as well: Pa made X by doing this, then this, then this, then this, then this, etc. There's hardly any plot or character development at all, very little conflict or danger, just a round thru the seasons in Laura's life.
