Seveneves

Like other Stephenson, this is super in-depth and fascinating in its details. If you like, say, orbital mechanics, you'll like Seveneves. It's about what happens to humanity when we find out the world will be destroyed in a few years - but it's barely a novel, and more like an insanely detailed thought experiment about 'how could we get the most people into orbit as quickly as possible.'

Then, of course, the plot picks up - what happens when they get there - but that plot is actually fairly tedious. THEN we fast-forward a few millennia to check on the survivors, and it gets ... bad.
