The Dark Forest

Reminder of the interesting bits for my future self: the Wallfacer idea to combat an ememy that has perfect knowledge of your actions but no ability to dissemble (including the reluctant Wallfacer that actually develops the reasonable plan), the avuncular detective / bodyguard, the hibernation as plot device, the Jackpot-like decline of human civilization (was it called the Valley? the Rift?), and the concept of the Dark Forest itself.

Really right on the edge of worth reading: it's full of interesting scifi bits, but the wandering plot and generally flat writing made me wonder if I would be able to finish it. But every time I was about to put it down, some new concept or flourish would be added, just interesting enough to hook me for a bit more. That's really a microcosm of my experience with scifi in general.

The past was like a handful of sand you thought you were squeezing tightly, but which had already run out through the cracks between your fingers. Memory was a river that had run dry long ago, leaving only scattered gravel in a lifeless riverbed. He had lived life always looking out for the next thing, and whenever he had gained, he had also lost, leaving him with little in the end.

Time is the one thing that can’t be stopped. Like a sharp blade, it silently cuts through hard and soft, constantly advancing. Nothing is capable of jolting it even the slightest bit, but it changes everything.
