It's really an example of how not to do context / history / worldbuilding in a novel. It’s got 50% exposition directly as narration, and 50% exposition just explaining stuff to a younger character. Now look - the young dope character who needs things explained to him is a time honored way of getting your exposition done. But there are limits! The young man in question here doesn’t need this much! He should know things that are part of the fabric of life, like what a church holiday is. It's too much.
