I hate to stereotype my reading like this, but I couldn't pass up a non-fiction book about whales, specifically one that leans so much on Melville.
Hoare writes a very personalized kind of non-fiction, spending as much time dealing with his emotional whale-related experiences as with any 'hard' facts. It it reads like a long, dry episode of This Cetacean Life.

As the word 'whale' evokes poetic wholeness, so 'squid' seems expresseive of fragmentary, faceless evil...
